Google held its highly anticipated I/O conference last month with CEO Sundar Pichai initiating the event. Spanning over two hours, the event was packed with exciting announcements. Right from the start, it was evident that this year’s focus was AI. To revisit some of its most exciting I/O announcements, Google has released a new crossword puzzle called I/O Crossword— built with a little help from the Gemini API.
According to Google, the I/O Crossword is a twist on the classic crossword puzzle that not only tests your knowledge of all things I/O, but also gives you a hands-on look at the power of Flutter, Firebase and the Gemini API.

Here’s how the game functions: Select a team represented by one of four mascots which will determine the color your spaces turn when you solve a word. Pick a starting point on the board. If you encounter difficulty solving a word, use the “ask for a hint” button. Your position on the leaderboard improves as you consecutively solve more words, benefiting both you and your team.

We utilised Gemini Advanced to curate 320 technology-themed words and clues based on this year’s Google I/O keynotes, enhancing the crossword game with engaging content. The tech giant’s development stack, including Flutter, Dart, Firebase, Project IDX, Google Chrome and Google Cloud, facilitated the creation of the game interface and mechanics.
Integrating AI-driven features like hints directly into the game experience allows players to overcome challenges without leaving the crossword grid, promoting continuous engagement and satisfaction as they finally crack the code.
