Gemini Code Assist is an enterprise-focused AI code completion and assistance tool.
It acts as a competitor to GitHub’s Copilot Enterprise.
You can use this to generate unit tests, write functions, and even create a class.
Google just hosted its Cloud Next conference. During the conference, Google made some big announcements, one of these was the unveiling of the Gemini Code Assist. This is an enterprise-focused AI code completion and assistance tool. Google previously provided us with a similar service on its Duet AI. Now, Code Assist is a more upgraded and rebranded version of this service.
Gemini Code Assist acts as a competitor to GitHub’s Copilot Enterprise. Google also has an upper hand here because its Gemini 1.5 Pro offers a million-token context window. This means that it will be able to provide a larger context when compared to its competitors.

Using this AI tool is as simple as using any other AI chatbot. You can use this to generate unit tests, write functions, and even create a class. You simply have to type in a prompt and AI will generate the text for you. For eg: If you wish to generate a function that checks if a year is a leap year or not, you can give this prompt- “Write a function that checks if a year is a leap year.” And even if you have an incomplete code that you are stuck with, you can ask it to complete it for you. Just like ChatGPT gives you a text response, this will give you a code. Easy right?
If you wish to access Code Assist, it will be available through plug-ins for editors like VS Code and JetBrains.
Brad Calder, Google’s VP, and GM for its cloud platform and technical infrastructure, said, “This upgrade brings a massive 1 million-token context window, which is the largest in the industry. This allows customers to perform large-scale changes across your entire code base, enabling AI-assisted code transformations that were not possible before.”
