Google has posted a doodle on its home page to commemorate 374th birth anniversary of Danish anatomist and geologist Nicolas Steno, widely regarded as the father of modern geology. Steno also known as Nicolaus Steno, Niels Steensen or Niels Stensen, is mainly known for his findings about the formation of rock layers and the fossil they contain. Steno was the one to propose the idea that the fossils are remains of dead living organisms and sedimentation is the main reason behind formation of rocks. He is also credited for giving a detailed analysis about earth’s strata and fossils. Steno had proposed, also known Steno’s law of superposition, that layers of rock had a chronological history of geologic events and that the fossils could provide information about the planet’s history, Steno’s contributions are considered to have played a main role in development of modern geology.
