Google today celebrates 306th birth anniversary of Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler with an interactive doodle on its home page. Leonhard Euler (15 April 1707 – 18 September 1783) is considered among the most important mathematicians of the 18th century and one of the greatest of all time.
Leonhard Euler made some very important discoveries in the areas such as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory. He is also credited for introducing the modern mathematical terminology and notation, especially for mathematical analysis. The Swiss mathematician is also popular for his contributions to the fields of mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, and astronomy.
He was tutored by Johann Bernoulli, a family friend who was then among Europe’s leading mathematicians. Euler’s father wanted him to become a pastor, Bernoulli persuaded him that his son had the potential to be a great mathematician. Read more about Leonhard Euler’s life here.
