Apart from telling you about the origins, it will also give you information about the metadata.
We’re living in a world where content is thriving but fake content is thriving even more. Everyone has become a victim of getting exposed to fake news, and fake images which we end up believing in even though we might not want to. And this has become a huge threat, especially during sensitive situations.
Consider the current Israel-Palestine conflict. In a sensitive situation like this AI-made and morphed images can do a lot of harm. And in the context of this conflict, we are coming across many such fake images. Keeping this event in mind, Google has stepped up and announced its new “About this image” tool.

What will About this Image tool do?
The feature is not new, Google had announced this during its I/O developer conference in May. It will now be slowly rolled out to English users across the globe.
Essentially, the “about this image” tool is built to fight the fake images that are circulating on the web. The aim of the tool is to give users some background information about the origins of the image so that we can check if the image is an original or a morphed one.
Apart from telling you about the origins, it will also give you information about the metadata, whenever available, of the photos. Eventually, users can track down things and judge their authenticity.

How can you use About this Image tool?
To access this feature, simply click on the three dots you see on the menu that pops up on Search and Google Images. However, Google’s plans for integrating it with Google Lens are yet not known.
Eventually, Google will allow you to access this feature by right-clicking on the picture itself, or by long-pressing on the image, and you can even swipe up on the Google App when you come across an image that you want to learn more about.
Apart from that, Google had also announced that it was working to update its pre-existing “Fact Check Explorer” initiative and also wants to incorporate AI-powered Search Generative Experience.
With the amount of disinformation spreading about the conflict in Israel and Palestine, Google had to step in. It already offers the “About this result feature” to help users find text-based sources. The image feature is still in its development phase and we’ll keep you posted about any new updates.
