Google Assistant is on its way to older Android phones and tablets
HIGHLIGHTS

The Google Assistant is coming to Android tablets running Android 7.0 Nougat and 6.0 Marshmallow and phones running 5.0 Lollipop

On its blog, Google has announced that the Assistant is coming to Android smartphones and tablets running older versions of Android. The blog says, “it’s coming to Android tablets running Android 7.0 Nougat and 6.0 Marshmallow and phones running 5.0 Lollipop”. The blog goes on to say, “The Google Assistant on Android 5.0 Lollipop has started to roll out in to users with the language set to English in the U.S., UK, India, Australia, Canada and Singapore, as well as in Spanish in the U.S., Mexico and Spain. It’s also rolling out to users in Italy, Japan, Germany, Brazil and Korea. Once you get the update and opt-in, you’ll see an Assistant app icon in your “All apps” list”.

Lollipop was launched back in 2014 and according to Google, more than 26 percent of all Android devices still run some version of Android 5.0 Lollipop and about 30 percent run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Nougat is on 23 percent of devices and Orio is on a mere 0.5% of Android devices.

The Google Assistant won’t work perfectly on these devices. Since the assistant isn’t integrated into the older Android Oses users will have to launch the Google Assistant app before they can talk to the phone.

Users must note that Marshmallow and Nougat tablet users, will get the update in the coming weeks in the US only.
