Over the years, Google has made itself a part of all our lives in a way in which it has become essential to everyone. And the best part is that Google never stops. According to recent reports, Google is going to help with traffic issues now! Read along to know more.
Google is working on a new initiative called ‘The Google Green Light Project’. Under this project, Google will be tracking traffic-related data that it receives from ‘Google Maps’, add to that some AI algorithms, and then it will eventually regulate the traffic flow in major cities across the world! And yes, two Indian cities are on the list too.

Let’s talk about the cities that this project will cater to first. So ‘The Google Green Light Project’ is currently active in 12 cities across the world. These include- Seattle (USA), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Haifa (Israel), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Bali & Jakarta (Indonesia), Bangalore, Hyderabad & Kolkata (India), Manchester (UK), Hamburg (Germany) and Budapest (Hungary). Google plans on expanding this to more cities soon.
Now coming to the point, how is it helpful? Understand that AI is the key player here. It will optimise the data that it receives from Google Maps, the app that most people use for navigating. Then, it will evaluate that data based on two parameters- traffic patterns and light scheduling of each intersection. After doing that, the AI will give recommendations to optimise traffic light timings and schedules.

When this is done, any local engineer can change the settings and schedule of the traffic light according to the flow of traffic and in turn reduce the traffic situation. And the best part is that this project doesn’t need any additional infrastructure and will work well with what’s already there.
The success of this project would mean that it affects 30 million car journeys per month. Google further informs that it would help lower stops at red light intersections to 30%. This is also good for the environment as the emissions will also go down by 10%.
