Google acquires Plink – visual search application platform
Being raised by Mark Cummins and James Philbin, Plink is a small UK-based company working on visual search technology. PlinkArt, the only product from Plink, is an Android mobile app for searching and identifyng artworks and to buy the same, using its very own image searching algorithm. This application became very popular in Android world and won the Android Develop Challenge last December.
Despite of being a small venture, Plink’s visual search engine must have caught Google’s eyes. So, constantly working on visual search platform, Google didn’t want to lose the chance to enhance its Goggles project, integrating the 2-man team of Plink developers along with it. Though, no financial details has been revealed until now, but PlinkArt blog has already declared about the coalition of Plink and Goggles.
Plink will not seize to exist; as the developers say, users can still be able to download and use this app on their devices, but no further development will be planned for it. Mark and James are moving over to US to join Google, promising to put their efforts into the new features on Goggles platform.
