Goodbye 60Hz: Apple’s iPad Air and iMac can get 90Hz displays
Apple is reportedly working on 90Hz screens for the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display.
Currently, all three products—the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display—feature displays with a standard 60Hz refresh rate.
If this rumour proves true, the new 90Hz panels would mark a noticeable improvement.
For many Apple users, the iPad Air and 24-inch iMac are go-to devices for work and entertainment, but one thing has often been a letdown—their 60Hz display refresh rate. As we all know, a higher refresh rate can make scrolling smoother and gaming more enjoyable. Well, it looks like Apple might be ready to say goodbye to the 60Hz displays in some of its products, with a rumour suggesting that the company is working on 90Hz screens for the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display.
This exciting information comes from an anonymous source who shared the news with the Upgrade podcast (via 9To5Mac). According to the source, Apple is developing a 90Hz display that could first show up in the M3-powered iPad Air. This display could eventually be expanded to the 24-inch iMac and the Studio Display, bringing a smoother visual experience across a range of Apple devices.

Currently, all three products—the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display—feature displays with a standard 60Hz refresh rate. If this rumour proves true, the new 90Hz panels would mark a noticeable improvement, particularly for those using their devices for tasks like video editing or gaming, where smoother motion is essential.
Here’s the exact quote from the source sent to Upgrade: “I have news on screen improvements for the next generation of the M3 iPad Air. Apple is working on a higher refresh rate LCD display with a new liquid motion panel fixed at around 90Hz. They’re also working on expanding it to other models or products like a 24-inch iMac and a next-gen studio display.”

Interestingly, while we’ve heard rumours about a 120Hz ProMotion display for the iPhone 17, this 90Hz technology would be a new development for Apple’s other products.
Apple’s next-generation iPad Air, expected to launch in early 2025, might be the first device to get the 90Hz screen. As for the 24-inch iMac, which just saw an update last week, it could receive the upgrade by late 2025. Meanwhile, the Studio Display’s next refresh remains unclear.
If these rumours turn out to be true, Apple fans can look forward to a much smoother experience on their favourite devices in the near future.
