Golden handcuffs, no leaves, and high stress: Employees share what’s it like to work at Nvidia
HIGHLIGHTS

A new report by Bloomberg shares that most of Nvidia's employees are working under high stress.

All these employees are making a lot of money, have luxury cars but are expected to work till late every single day.

But, there are many high-value rewards that people are not willing to let go of.

Everything comes at a price. No one probably understands this better than the Nvidia employees right now. While the chipmaker has seen unprecedented growth in the last few years, a new report by Bloomberg shares that most of its employees are working under high stress which leaves them with little to no time for themselves. All these employees are making a lot of money, have luxury cars but are expected to work till late every single day, share regular work reports with company CEO Jensen Huang, and sometimes don’t even get weekends off.

Interestingly, the revelations come at a time when the company has seen a staggering 3,776 pct growth in its stock value since early 2019. Some of it has been extended to the employees as well, who are now living a comfortable life, as per the report. The cost they have to pay in exchange is the rigorous work hours.

Working in golden handcuffs

The report quotes a former technical support worker at Nvidia who shared that he was expected to work seven days a week, often late into the night. Others have shared similar concerns and experiences. One revealed that most employees don’t complain or continue at the workplace because they have been promised lucrative stock options. There are other high-value rewards that people are not willing to let go of.

A former marketing employee shared that he attended multiple high-stress meetings daily for two years due to the “golden handcuffs” — the promise of substantial financial rewards. Nvidia has seen a major turn in fortunes since 2019. It even became the world’s biggest company briefly earlier this year.

Torturing to success

A lot of this is because of how Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang wants to run things. The 61-year-old dynamic CEO had earlier this year said that he prefers to “torture” his employees “into greatness” instead of firing them.

“And so it’s tongue in cheek, but people know that I rather torture them into greatness. So, I would rather torture you into greatness because I believe in you. And I think coaches that that really believe in their team, torture them into greatness. And oftentimes, they’re so close, don’t give up. They’re so close to greatness,” Huang said in an interview in June.

As per the Bloomberg report, he has made it mandatory for all Nvidia employees to send regular e-mails to a centralised email ID, listing the five things they’re working on. Once in a while, he would respond to these emails, seeking more details or giving instructions.
