Google made a strategic move a few years ago. Initially, it wasn’t very successful, but it seems to be paying off now. I’m referring to Google’s decision to discontinue free unlimited storage for Photos in 2021. Following that, Google began charging users for additional cloud storage. However, not many users showed interest in this until recently. Google introduced Gemini Advanced, an AI assistant powered by Gemini Ultra 1.0 LLM, integrated with Google One. It is now available for purchase in India at a monthly price of ₹1,950. Since the announcement of Gemini Advanced, Google has experienced a sudden surge in Google One subscribers, reaching 100 million followers
Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, celebrated this achievement by announcing the milestone on X (formerly Twitter). When Google discontinued free unlimited cloud storage, Google One initially offered users only one primary incentive – additional storage. However, Google made another strategic move to transition its user base to Google One. How did Google’s cloud service achieve 100 million subscribers? The tech giant introduced Gemini Advanced, bundled with Google One’s premium subscription, the Google One AI Premium plan. This plan includes 2TB of storage, the Gemini Advanced AI assistant, and more. Thus, it not only offers more storage but also a variety of AI features. This highlights that users are more interested in AI than just storage.
Apart from that, there is one more good news for users. Sundar Pichai has promised more AI integration in other Google One services such as Gmail, Docs, and more very soon.

Gemini Advanced operates on Google’s most robust AI model, Gemini Ultra 1.0 LLM. It performs standard chatbot functions and even more. Gemini Advanced provides basic generative AI assistance and handles complex tasks such as reasoning, following instructions, coding, and collaboration. Because it is also paired with Google Assistant, you can use Gemini to make a call, send texts, set alarms, and much more. Additionally, Gemini Advanced can also analyze images, offering users extensive information, akin to ‘circle to search’ but more advanced and informative.
