Four Taiwanese employees at a Foxconn facility in Zhengzhou, China, have been detained by local authorities. This incident raises significant concerns about the safety of foreign workers in China and the potential impact on international supply chains, especially given the facility’s crucial role in Apple’s iPhone production.

The employees, whose specific job titles have not been revealed, are accused of actions resembling a breach of trust. However, the exact details of the allegations remain unclear. Taiwanese officials have described these accusations as bizarre and have called on Chinese authorities to carry out a quick and transparent investigation. They emphasise that prolonged uncertainty could hurt investor confidence in the Chinese market.

The Zhengzhou factory, commonly known as “iPhone City,” is one of the largest iPhone manufacturing plants in the world. It plays an important role in Apple’s supply chain, significantly influencing the production and distribution of Apple products globally. Although Foxconn, a key supplier for Apple and one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers, stated that it did not suffer any financial loss from this situation, the company has refrained from providing further comments.

The Taiwanese Mainland Affairs Council, responsible for managing relations with Beijing, has expressed deep concerns about the implications of such detentions, particularly in light of recent crackdowns in China targeting Taiwanese citizens. These developments come as many Taiwanese nationals fear wrongful detentions or interrogations while in China. The Straits Exchange Foundation, a semiofficial organization in Taiwan, has stepped in to offer support to the families of the detained employees.

This incident occurs amidst rising tensions between China and Taiwan, with the Chinese government tightening its control over various sectors and individuals it perceives as threats. Earlier this year, Beijing introduced new rules that could impose severe penalties on those it labels as “Taiwan independence die-hards.”

As a result, foreign businesses operating in China are becoming increasingly cautious due to the unpredictable legal environment. High-profile detentions, including those of a Japanese pharmaceutical executive and an Australian journalist, have heightened concerns. Despite China’s efforts to attract foreign investment, such incidents create a daunting atmosphere for companies wishing to establish or maintain a presence in the region.
