That’s when the Delhi Police incorporated Artificial Intelligence into their investigation.
With the help of AI, the police created 500 posters that featured the victim’s face.
AI is the biggest trend in technology that this decade is seeing. AI is making impossible things possible. No, I am not exaggerating, there are instances where people have gone “Whoa AI can do that?.” And today I have just another piece of news that helps establish the strength and power that Artificial Intelligence holds. Recently, the Delhi Police used AI to solve a murder mystery. Read along to know the full story.
The Police recovered a severed body of a young man under the Geeta Colony flyover in east Delhi, on the 10th of January 2024. The post-mortem studies revealed that strangulation caused the young man’s death. However, the body was in such a state that identification on or around the body was impossible.
How did AI help Delhi Police?
That’s when the Delhi Police incorporated Artificial Intelligence into their investigation. The main problem that the police were facing was in identifying the body as it was unrecognisable, as I mentioned earlier. So, AI helped the Delhi Police reconstruct the victim’s face in digital form. Even the background of the image was altered to look like the Yamuna area.
With this digital reconstruction, the police created 500 posters that featured the victim’s face. These posters were placed across Delhi and circulated on social media platforms like WhatsApp. This eventually led to solving the case when a man looked at a poster outside a police station, came forward, and identified the victim as his elder brother Hitendra.
The police were quick to work on this information, and further investigation revealed that Hitendra was involved in a dispute with three other people which led to his death. These three men also took the help of a woman to hide all evidence. Eventually, all of the four accused were arrested.
If AI is used constructively, then it has a lot of potential to help us, in this situation, it acted like Dr Watson to Sherlock Holmes. But sadly, it is being misused too much to scam people, deep fakes, and whatnot.
