Updated on 06-Feb-2012

After filing for a $5 billion IPO, social networking giant Facebook is now exploring various sources of revenue generation. The company has now turned its focus on the mobile devices for this purpose. Soon , Facebook will start showing advertisements on the mobile devices. According to a Financial Times report, Facebook has already finalised the proposals for displaying what it dubs as “featured stories” in the news feed. These sponsored featured stories are likely to start appearing by March, ahead of its IPO due in May.

The report further says the move is going to test Facebook’s “ability” to hold stakeholders’s interest as well as maintain the rapid revenue growth. It’s notable that Facebook in its IPO filing last week pointed out mobile users could be its major source of revenue in the wake of a growing user base turning to smartphones rather than PCs. It is believed that half of its 850 million members access the social networking site via mobile devices. However, the mobile users may not be willing to accept commercial messages on the small screen of their smartphones.

Facebook is growing at a massive speed in countries such as India and Brazil. The company can bank on these emerging for revenue generation in near future. Facebook has brought in a number of changes of late, ranging from new design to ‘compulsoryTimeline profile. Though it is the largest social networking site on the Internet right now, other sites such as Twitter and Google are also growing at a good pace. Facebook’s fresh move to bring in ads for mobile users is definitely going to raise many eyebrows.
