Facebook testing facial recognition to verify and unlock account
HIGHLIGHTS

Facebook is testing a way to regain access to a locked Facebook account by using your face to verify your identity

Facebook is working on facial recognition technology to help users get access to their locked Facebook accounts. According to TechCrunch, “that could be especially useful if you’re somewhere that you can’t receive two-factor authentication SMS, like on a plane or while traveling abroad, or if you lose access to your email account”. In a statement, Facebook told TechCrunch, “We are testing a new feature for people who want to quickly and easily verify account ownership during the account recovery process. This optional feature is available only on devices you’ve already used to log in. It is another step, alongside two-factor authentication via SMS, that were taking to make sure account owners can confirm their identity.”

Whether the face recognition technology can be fooled by a photo or an evil twin is something we will talk about when Facebook officially demonstrates the feature. An advantage that Facebook has is that it has ample photos of you in its database (thanks to your profile) which may help it make facial recognition smarter than Apple’s Face ID. Apple recently announced the iPhone X (ten, not X) and has replaced the companies famous Touch ID biometric authentication on the flagship device with facial recognition.

If you think facial recognition technology sounds creepy, then we’d like to remind you that Facebook has been using facial recognition technology for years when it makes tag suggestions to the photos you upload.

One thing to remember is that biometric data can be a danger in the wrong hands. You can change your password if its compromised, but what will you do if your retinal data, or fingerprint data or facial recognition information is breached?
