Previously, Musk stated that the third version of Grok would necessitate a minimum of 100,000 of the chips — a significant jump from the 20,000 GPUs reportedly utilised for training Grok 2.0.

In the presentation, Musk also informed investors that the planned GPU cluster would be at least four times larger than anything currently used by xAI’s competitors.

In my opinion, Elon Musk’s ambition to create a “gigafactory of compute” highlights his commitment to advancing AI technology. The planned supercomputer, utilising tens of thousands of NVIDIA H100 GPUs, could significantly outpace current industry standards.

In related news, last month, xAI introduced the Grok-1.5 Vision or Grok-1.5V AI model. Grok-1.5V is the company’s first multimodal model. With Grok-1.5V, the AI chatbot can understand a wide variety of visual information, including documents, diagrams, charts, screenshots and photographs.

According to the company, the Grok-1.5V’s performance surpasses that of its peers in xAI’s new RealWorldQA benchmark. For those who are unaware, xAI’s RealWorldQA benchmark is designed to evaluate basic real-world spatial understanding capabilities of multimodal models. In the coming months, xAI plans to make significant improvements in both capabilities across various modalities such as images, audio, and video.
