E-learning grows in India, Bengaluru tops the chart

Beating Delhi and Mumbai, Bangalore found to be more friendly with online learning, says Coursera

Coursera, an open online education provider in India has released “How the World Learns: Spotlight on the India”, an infographic that states its findings of the recently conducted analysis on online learning. According to the analysis, India is the third largest online learning market with 1.3 million learners amongst which Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad top the list. Indian registrations saw a jump of 70% from 2014 to 2015 with the most preferred courses being Computer science, Business and Data science. 

The data also reveals increasing interest in flexible, career-relevant online courses which has resulted in the spike in new registrations, in India, over the past 12 months. Out of the overall 18 million registered learners on Coursera, 1.3 million are from India, making it the third largest market for online learning after the US and China. Bengaluru being contributing for more than half of total enrollments, Computer science was chosen by over 25 percent whereas 18 percent enrollment were interested in Data science subjects, making the courses more popular in India than in any of the other 10 highest enrollment countries. The data also reveals that men enrollment is as high as 76 percent but just 24 percent women are showing interest in the online education, which is lower than the worldwide average of 40%.  

The other fields that Indians are showing keen interest include Business studies, Social science, Physical science, Personal development along with Arts and Humanities. 21 percent of active learners access the course materials on a phone, of which 12 percent exclusively learn just on their phones. The most preferred subject to be learnt on a phone is Personal development whereas the least preferred is Computer science with just 23 percent! Interestingly, the most preferred learning time in India is at 4.00 PM which is same as China, but Computer science saw students peaking at to 9.00 PM in India.

On the release of the infographic, Rick Levin, CEO of Coursera commented, “The most active online learners in India are entrepreneurial, young professionals in their 20s and 30s who are focused on gaining the technical skills that are sought after by India’s top employers,”.
