Job seekers often come across attractive job offers, especially in foreign countries, but how can one tell if it’s a legitimate opportunity or a scam? A recent case in Delhi highlights just how easily people can be duped when looking for work abroad.
A 27-year-old man, Raja Kumar, from Saket, lost Rs 2.7 lakh in a fake job scam after being promised a high-paying position at a hotel in Kuwait. The scam started when Kumar was approached by a man named Mukesh Sahni in South Delhi, who assured him that he could arrange a job in Kuwait with a handsome salary and overtime benefits. Sahni convinced Kumar that he would handle all the paperwork.
As Kumar moved forward with the process, Sahni began asking for payments for various fees, including visa processing, medical tests, and other expenses. Kumar, trusting the process, made the payments, believing that it would eventually lead to the promised job, reports TOI.
But as time passed, doubts began to surface. The tipping point came when Sahni provided Kumar with a phone number for a man named Sagar, who was supposed to pick him up from Noida Sector 18 Metro Station and take him to the embassy. Kumar waited for hours, but Sagar never showed up. When Kumar called him, he was given vague and unsatisfactory answers.
“I realised I was cheated when the promised driver, who was supposed to take me to the embassy, never showed up,” Kumar said.
Finally, Kumar approached the police with all the evidence he had collected, including chat logs, bank statements, and fake documents.
