Stan Lee, an iconic name in the world of comic books is no more. The comic book legend passed away on Monday at the age of 95. In a statement to Reuters, his daughter J,C, Lee said, “He felt an obligation to his fans to keep creating. He loved his life and he loved what he did for a living. His family loved him and his fans loved him. He was irreplaceable.” Stan Lee is known for creating iconic comic book characters such as Spider-Man, Thor, Black Panther, Iron Man, Fantastic 4 and many many more that have lived in comic book pages, animated cartoons and of course on the silver screen as a part of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). For those unaware, Stan Lee has been in the comic book business since 1939. He has shared the creative board with the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and many more.
In 2009, Disney bought Marvel for $4 billion. The collaboration has led to some of the most successful superhero movies to hit the big screen. The last Marvel movie, Avengers: Infinity War's made $2.05 billion worldwide. It features all the marvel characters that have made a big screen appearance in the MCU including the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spicer-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Thanos and Dr. Strange among others, all created or co-created by Stan Lee.
Stan Lee always wanted to make his superheroes relatable. One superhero character that everyone thought would fail was Spider-Man. However he turned out to be one of the most successful characters for Marvel. Spider-Man is an everyday teenager getting bullied, looking out for his aunt and uncle – relatable to every teen growing up. He is bestowed with superpowers when he gets bitten by a radioactive spider. There have been many iterations of the webslinger over the years and in December 2018, we will see the launch of Spider-Man into the Spiderverse which will bring together various Spider-Men from different story lines.
Throughout his life Stan Lee has said some inspiring things. We will list some of those quotes for you below.
"Life is never completely without its challenges." – Stan Lee
"I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comic-book writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then I began to realize: entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it they might go off the deep end. I feel that if you’re able to entertain people, you’re doing a good thing." – Stan Lee
"[Being a ‘geek’] has become a badge of honor. It’s geeks who really make or break a TV show or movie or video game. They’re the ones who are passionate about these things and who collect [the paraphernalia] and talk about them. A geek is really somebody interested in communication and entertainment and [finding] the best way to avail himself or herself to it..” – Stan Lee
"The more you read, the better you’re going to become as a storyteller." – Stan Lee
If you thought superheroes only lived on the silver screen or the pages of a comic book, then we ask you to think again and leave you with this last quote by the legend that was and in our hearts will always be… Stan Lee…
“Another definition of a hero is someone who is concerned about other people’s well-being, and will go out of his or her way to help them — even if there is no chance of a reward. That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero.”
