Chornobyl360 is an interactive VR Documentary of the massive disaster
A team from Ukraine has been creating a documentary based on Virtual Reality about one of the worst nuclear accidents in world history
The Chornobyl360 documentary is a project created by a team of young people from Ukraine. The project offers an interactive virtual reality experience, which tells the story of the nuclear disaster. The documentary will be available for VR headsets such as Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard.
The Chernobyl disaster (Chornobyl in Ukranian) of 1986 is one of the worst disasters that the world has seen. It is classified as a Level 7 disaster on the International Nuclear Event scale, one of the only two, with the other one being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011 in Japan. The incident took place in the city of Pripyat, located in Kiev, Ukraine.
The disaster loomed when an unexpected power surge appeared at the nuclear reactor four during the test run on April 26, 1968. When an emergency shut down mission was attempted by the scientists, a sudden, massive spike in the power output occurred, leading to a crack in the vessel reactor. A massive series of steam explosions followed this, and resulted in a poisonous fire due to the radioactive nature of the nuclear plant. The fire spewed out highly radioactive elements into the atmosphere and the radioactive cloud majorly affected Europe, Russia and the Middle East.
Nearly 50,000 people relocated from the radioactive zones of Pripyat, and the city has been a ghost town ever since. The Chornobyl360 VR experience provides an intriguing tour of this landmark, for those who are intrigued by it and cannot visit the zone because of radioactive exposures. The team from Ukraine is also making apps for smartphones, tablets and desktops to promote the virtual experience. A Kickstarter campaign has been initiated, which aims to push it to the masses.
