OpenAI restricts access to Ghibli-style image generation tool, here’s why
HIGHLIGHTS

People have been sharing their Ghibli images online left right and centre.

The surge in demand for this has led OpenAI to temporarily impose rate limits on image requests.

The feature, as it is, was only limited to paid users.

OpenAI recently announced new upgrades to its GPT 4o model. This included image generation capabilities, and one such feature, the Ghibli image generation went really viral on social media. People have been sharing their Ghibli images online left right and centre. But there’s a little bad news. The surge in demand for ChatGPT’s advanced image generation capabilities has led OpenAI to temporarily impose rate limits on image requests. It seems like OpenAI did not expect such a demand and now it has become tricky for them to handle such a high demand.

Speaking about the same, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT, but our GPUs are melting.” While he did not specify the exact limit, he assured users that this restriction is temporary as OpenAI works to improve efficiency.

The feature, as it is, was only limited to paid users, and the company has now further delayed the rollout of the image generation feature for free-tier users to manage server load. However, even with this measure, the infrastructure strain persisted, necessitating further restrictions. Altman mentioned that free-tier users will soon be able to generate up to three images per day, but for now, access remains limited.

The latest image generation tool that is going so viral online is powered by the GPT-4o model. It has significantly improved realism and text rendering capabilities. The tool has been widely praised for its advancements, with the company calling it a “step change” over previous models. Excited users have been using it to create so many pictures of themselves and share them on their social media pages.

The move to limit image requests clearly shows the immense computational power and energy required for AI-driven image generation. The temporary restrictions underscore the growing popularity of AI-generated content and the challenges in scaling such powerful tools.
