ChatGPT adds ‘Memory’ feature: What is it and how it will help you?

OpenAI is going big to enhance the ChatGPT experience better day-by-day. The AI company is actively working on its upcoming AI model, the GPT-5. Last year, OpenAI faced minimal AI competition. However, other tech companies like Microsoft and Google have also leveled up their AI game since then. Along with that, 2024 is also said to be all about AI. Considering this, OpenAI, which is among the first companies to roll out generative AI, has to come up with more advanced features this time. And guess what? OpenAI has already started it with the all-new ‘Memory’ feature.

What is Memory on ChatGPT?

OpenAI has rolled out a new feature to its chatbot. This is the ‘Memory’ that works pretty much like cookies on websites. It is said to recognise you, your preferences, and everything you discuss with it. Previously, OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman said that he wants to make ChatGPT more personal. Now with this new feature, it seems that ChatGPT could get more personal by remembering the communications.

How will it help you?

The Memory feature is very useful for users who use ChatGPT daily. If you are working on a project that could take days, you don’t have to log in every day and put all the information again and again. Once Memory is rolled out to every account, ChatGPT will memorise your inputs. Interestingly, this feature will be available for both free and ChatGPT Plus users.

Setting everything aside, I mentioned that Memory is pretty much like cookies. Well, this is not something everyone likes. Even I reject cookies on websites so that they don’t collect my data. In a world of advanced AI, where many people are falling victim to data misuse, we don’t want to take the risk. So, you can also turn off the Memory on ChatGPT. To do this, go to Settings > Personalization > Turn off Memory.
