The company also highlighted the versatility of these calls with AI characters, emphasising their utility for language practice, mock interviews, and integration into role-playing games.

Users can effortlessly initiate calls with a user-generated AI character with a simple tap of a button. Character.AI emphasises that this feature is designed to ensure a smooth calling experience with minimised latency.

You can seamlessly switch between calling and texting, with an option to interrupt the AI’s speech through a “Tap to interrupt” feature.

In March, Character.AI introduced Character Voices, enabling users to hear characters speak during one-on-one chats. The company announced that users can create their own voices, contributing to a library of over 1 million voices within the app.

Meanwhile, amid complaints on Reddit about characters’ changing personalities, the startup clarified to 404 Media that no major changes were implemented. Some users may have been part of a test phase, where behavioural differences in characters were observed, potentially leading to these perceptions.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Google is working on its own customised chatbot platform to take on Meta and Character.AI.
