It all started when Rajesh Kumar received a call from a person claiming to be Ajay Tripathi from Punjab National Bank. The caller asked if Rajesh was interested in applying for a credit card. After showing interest, Rajesh was directed to continue the conversation on WhatsApp. During a video call, the scammer asked Rajesh to verify his identity. Trusting the person, Rajesh shared his American Express and Axis Bank credit card details.
The fraudster then sent a link, claiming it was for completing the credit card application process. However, when Rajesh clicked the link, he immediately noticed suspicious transactions on both of his credit cards. He quickly contacted the customer service of both banks to block his cards, but by then, the fraudster had already made six unauthorised transactions amounting to Rs 8.69 lakh from the American Express card, reports TOI. Another Rs 60,000 was charged on the Axis Bank card.
