The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a new warning to Android users. If you are one, please read this carefully. This warning is regarding multiple high-risk vulnerabilities identified in smartphones that run on Qualcomm and MediaTek processors.

As per CERT-In, smartphones running on Android versions 12, 12L, 13, and 14 are affected by these newly discovered security flaws. These vulnerabilities have been found in various Android components such as the Framework, System, Kernel, Arm component, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek components, Qualcomm components, and Qualcomm closed-source components. If not taken care of, these vulnerabilities can be exploited by attackers. With this, they can obtain sensitive information.

Because of this bug, attackers will be able to get elevated access without requiring additional execution privileges. They can easily then disable or successfully bypass your device.

Speaking on the matter, a Qualcomm Spokesperson said, “Developing technologies that endeavor to support robust security and privacy is a priority for Qualcomm Technologies. The standard monthly Android Security bulletins are an essential tool for the continued health of the Android ecosystem. For the issues mentioned, Qualcomm made fixes available to its OEMs in advance of the August Android Security bulletin. We encourage end users to apply security updates as they become available from device makers.”

How to protect your smartphone?

Here’s how you can protect your smartphone against this vulnerability:

  1. Update your device: Firstly, make sure that your Android device is updated. Make sure that you are running the latest software.
  2. Also, make sure that automatic updates are on for both your operating system and apps. If you do that then it ensures that you receive security patches and updates timely. This then minimises your vulnerability to potential threats.
  3. This should be a thumbnail for all users despite the situation. Always download apps only from trusted sources like the Google Play Store. Avoid downloading apps from unknown third-party sources to reduce the risk of malware.
  4. You should know this by now. Please do not click on any random messages, emails, or links, especially those asking for personal information or credentials. Phishing attacks are common methods for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities.
  5. This is the last resort, if you think that your device has been compromised, consider performing a factory reset. This will erase all data on your device, including any malware. But first, back up your data.
