Brazil World Cup slaughter most tweeted about sporting event ever
HIGHLIGHTS

With over 35 million tweets and a peak of over 580,000 tweets per minute, the Brazil-Germany semi-final broke social media records.

There were a LOT of records broken in last night’s 7-1 decimation of Brazil by Germany in the ongoing FIFA World Cup and Twitter has revealed that one such record was achieved outside the Estádio Mineirão stadium. A total of 35.6 million tweets were fired off about the match which makes it the most tweeted about sporting event in history.

The new figure breaks the records set by Super Bowl 48 which saw 24.9 million tweets, and the Brazil-Chile match from this World Cup that saw almost 400,000 tweets per minute at one point. During the semi-final match between Germany and Brazil, after Sami Khedira rammed in Germany’s fifth at the 29th minute, Twitter saw over 580,000 tweets- another new record.

While tonight’s Netherlands-Argentina semi-final and the final match on Sunday are expected to keep social networks on fire, they will have to be something special to outclass the record stats generated by last night’s German Blitzkrieg.
