BlackBerry PlayBook now destined for BB10 OS update

Updated on 16-Mar-2012

Research In Motion has reportedly confirmed that its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will be given a BlackBerry 10 OS (BB10 OS) update, at “some point after the launch” of the much awaited operating system, scheduled for the end of 2012.

The news, while a relief for PlayBook owners, is not too surprising – BB10 OS, or BBX as it was previously known, will be based on QNX after all, the platform that the PlayBook already runs on. The recent update to PlayBook OS 2.0, released in late February, has been received well by owners and reviewers alike, already a step in the direction BB10 will take.

Speaking to TechRadar, Rob Orr, RIM’s VP of Product Management elaborated on the attitude of PlayBook customers with regards to updates:

“The updates from PlayBook 1 to PlayBook 2: astonishing take up rates in a very short space of time. A big percentage of our users just take it, take, it take it…It’s actually quite different to our smartphone users, who are a little bit tentative to take software updates…But as we move into this new world of mobile computing, frequent updates and auto updates bring in new features and new functions – and that’s the way forward. It’s been really positive to see.”
