Scammers are getting more creative by the day and we really have to fight them with our eyes and ears open. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued an alert to State Bank of India users. SBI is one of the most popular banks in India and scammers are using that for their benefit. Scammers are trying to steal the sensitive information of SBI users. If you’re an SBI user or know someone who is an SBI user, read along to save yourself from getting scammed.

Taking to its social media handles, PIB shared the tactics that the scammers are using to con innocent customers. Scammers are sending fake messages to SBI customers. The message asks customers to download a fake app to redeem SBI rewards. One such message read, “SBI NetBanking Reward Points,” and sometimes the value of these points reaches up to Rs 18,000.

These messages also create a sense of urgency stating that you should immediately act upon it. But these messages are not coming from SBI and are linked with fake and malicious websites. Once users click on these links and download the app, they can unknowingly install malware that can access personal information, including passwords and bank details. These APK files can grant hackers remote access to users’ data without their knowledge and then this data can easily be misused.

How to stay safe from this scam?

To safeguard users against this, PIB has cautioned and reminded users that SBI does not send any links to APK files. For legitimate rewards, customers can visit SBI’s official SBI Rewardz website or contact their verified customer care.

Users should not engage with any malicious SMS or WhatsApp messages and ignore messages from unknown numbers. If you’re in doubt, just confirm it with the customer care of SBI, or any other platform from where you’re getting similar messages.
