Asus is holding back its AR headset at the request of a “very big player”
Asus CEO Jerry Shen says that the headset will be unveiled at next year's CES
Asus will launch an augmented reality headset at next year’s CES in Las Vegas. The company’s CEO Jerry Shen told CNET that the product is in fact ready, but is being put on hold at the request of a “very big player.” Further, the company will also launch a virtual reality headset alongside its AR headset, but Shen did not say what it could be. CNET also posted a picture of two headsets taken at the company’s press event at Computex.
It is speculated that the “big player” mentioned by Shen might be Microsoft as the company is one of the foremost players in the field of AR thanks to its HoloLens headset. The headset was unveiled the company's BUILD conference last year and the Development Edition of the device is available for developers at a price of $3,000 (approx. Rs. 2,01,900).
While Microsoft is working on AR technology, its competitor, Google, is working on VR. The company recently unveiled its VR platform called Daydream, which is built upon Android N. The company also noted that device manufacturers will have to ensure that their devices meets some basic smartphone hardware requirements for Daydream to work. Google has announced hardware partners for the manufacturing of smartphones, which support the platform which includes Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, Asus, and Alcatel.
