For quite some time now, there have been rumours about Apple working on a new smart home device. If you’re an Apple fan eagerly waiting for the next big thing, this might be it. The company is reportedly developing a new home accessory that could blend the functions of an iPad, Apple TV, and HomePod. From a new report by 9to5Mac, we may finally have a clearer picture of what to expect from this product.

Sources familiar with the development have revealed that this new device, codenamed “J490,” is set to feature some impressive capabilities. The HomeAccessory will likely be powered by Apple’s A18 chip, making it more advanced than the current HomePods. This could mean support for Apple Intelligence features.

Interestingly, the device is said to feature a square display, breaking away from the more common rectangular design of the iPad. While it’s still unclear if this shape will be part of the final product, the HomeAccessory is expected to come with a built-in camera. This camera won’t just be for video calls via FaceTime, it could also identify users and hand gestures from a distance, allowing for hands-free control—a handy feature for those in the kitchen or around the house.

The HomeAccessory might not only work like an Apple TV, running apps and playing media, but it will likely also function as an AirPlay receiver. Additionally, the device will have a customizable Lock Screen, offering clock faces similar to those seen on Apple TV running tvOS 18.

While the exact name of this device is still under wraps, Apple seems to be eyeing a spring 2025 launch. However, like with all tech projects, plans may change before then.
