Apple and AI want to be two peas in a pod but it seems like a lot is happening behind the scenes that is creating hurdles. I have written a lot of stories about this and it seems like the California-based tech giant isn’t able to come down to a conclusion. Previously, you might have heard how Apple was planning to onboard Google’s Gemini AI to enhance its AI ecosystem but that didn’t work out and instead, the company shook hands with OpenAI. Now, we are hearing that Apple is looking for Gemini AI again. Yes, I know, it is kind of hard to catch up but read along as I spill the tea.
You might be aware of how Apple is planning to announce its AI revolution during its upcoming WWDC event on June 10th. Before that, when Apple announced the new set of iPads during the ‘Let Loose’ event, it gave us a hint into its AI ambitions with the M4 chipset. Now, reports suggest that Apple has finalised its deal with OpenAI to get AI-powered by ChatGPT for iOS 18. However, at the same time, it is also trying to work out a deal with Google to get Gemini AI an option too, as per a Bloomberg report.\

If reports are to be believed, Apple doesn’t really want to put all the power in one hand and is not quite sure about OpenAI being the single-source supplier” for AI features on iOS. Some think that Apple might have felt this way after the recent Scarlett Johansson-OpenAI controversy, where the actor accused Sam Altman of using a voice for the new OpenAI model which was really similar to hers. In addition to this, the drama that ensued at the OpenAI office last year has also made Apple seek Gemini AI as an alternative.
