Apple is reportedly developing a smart doorbell that could revolutionise home security. This device, still in its early stages, is expected to feature advanced facial recognition technology powered by Face ID, allowing it to identify residents and automatically unlock compatible smart locks. If it launches, this could give Apple a strong foothold in the smart home market, competing with established players like Amazon’s Ring and Google Nest.
The doorbell would likely integrate with Apple’s HomeKit protocol, working seamlessly with third-party smart locks already on the market. Apple may also collaborate with a lock manufacturer to offer a complete doorbell-lock system. Privacy is a key focus for Apple, and the company believes its reputation for secure and private technology could make this device more appealing than its competitors.

The smart doorbell is expected to utilise Apple’s upcoming Proxima wireless chip. It may also include a secure enclave feature to protect sensitive data. However, entering the home security market is not without risks.
There’s always a chance of a system malfunction, such as the doorbell misidentifying someone and granting access to an unauthorized person. Additionally, if a breach occurs with a third-party lock, Apple could face criticism, even if it’s not directly responsible. These challenges are significant, but Apple’s track record of innovation suggests it will work to minimise these risks.
The smart doorbell is just one part of Apple’s push into the smart home market. In 2025, the company plans to launch a new smart home hub with a 6-inch display. This hub will control various smart devices, support FaceTime, and even play videos. Apple is also upgrading its existing HomePod mini and Apple TV with a new Proxima chip.

Additionally, Apple is developing an in-home security camera to complement the hub. This camera, along with the doorbell, could help Apple attract more users to its ecosystem.
While the smart doorbell might not hit the market until late 2025, it’s clear that Apple is committed to redefining the smart home experience with privacy and innovation at its core.
