Apple iOS 11 brings one of the most significant changes yet to Apple's mobile operating system.
Apple's next-generation mobile operating system, iOS 11, will be officially released to the public on September 19. Apple had showcased iOS 11 for the first time at WWDC, the company's annual developer conference in June. The update brings one of the most significant changes yet to Apple's mobile operating system.
With iOS 11, Apple is dropping support for 32-bit apps and adding a new Files app that will allow users to access the file system on iOS for the first time. The iOS 11 also turns the iPad Pro into an even more powerful device with enhanced multitasking, customisable dock and seamless integration with Apple Pencil. Siri on iOS 11 has a more natural voice and supports translation, making it a useful digital assistant. Apple has also enhanced iMessage with an option for users to send money using Apple Pay. It also brings a customisable control center, Do not Disturb mode while driving and a quick type keyboard that makes it easier to enter letters, numbers and symbols without the need to switch back and forth.
One of the biggest advancement comes in the form of ARKit that turns iOS into one of the biggest platforms for augmented reality experiences. With ARKit, developers can natively design app and games to take advantage of the Metal API and Unity Engine to bring augmented reality experience to iPhone and iPad. At yesterday's event at the Steve Jobs Theater in the Apple Park campus, the iPhone maker also showcased new gesture support coming exclusively to iPhone X. With iPhone X missing out on Touch ID button, Apple is adding new gestures to make navigating the device a seamless experience. iPhone X users can simply swipe up from the bottom to go to home screen. Swiping and pausing will bring up the app switcher, while swiping down from the top right corner brings up the control center. In order to access notifications, users need to swipe down from the top left corner while swiping down from the middle of the screen brings up the search.
Some of the features were spotted in the leaked iOS 11 GM ahead of the official announcement. The free update will be available for iPhone 5s and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad 5th generation, iPad mini 2 and later and iPod touch 6th generation.
