HIGHLIGHTS

Apple has renamed its VR and AR systems, calling it xrOS

It is believed that the tech giant is working on multiple models that will offer variations in features as well as pricing

The devices may launch in 2023.

Apple had begun working on a new AR and VR system all the way back in 2017, and though there hasn’t been a lot of news on that front, we now have some indication that the system may be close to launch. Apple has renamed the offering and is now calling it xrOS, and is believed to be working on three models, "N301," "N421," and "N602." Note that these are not the official names of the products, they are merely codes used to refer to them.

Apple’s new AR, VR system to launch soon?

It is believed that the N301 is the Apple Reality Pro, which is a name that was filed for a trademark in August of this year. The Apple Reality Pro will be a mixed-reality headset that is intended to compete with Meta’s Quest Pro.

The N602 is believed to be a second-generation release. It is believed to offer two variants. One variant will be the more affordable model of the two while the second one will have a few additional features.

The third model, the N421, may be closer to the Apple Glasses than an actual mixed-reality headset. Its functionality is still to be revealed.

It is believed that the xrOS will launch sometime in 2023

What will Apple’s AR and VR set include?

The upcoming AR and VR set will include a pair of 4K OLED displays. There will be 15 camera modules on the outer panels of the display, and these are likely to support eye movements and hand gestures. We can expect these handsets to be quite expensive, with rumours indicating that they may be priced up to $3,000.

Apple’s new AR and VR sets are believed to be in the advanced stages of development. We may hear more news about the device now that we are nearing 2023, which is when these devices are supposed to launch.
