Apple abandons in-house 5G modem plans: Here’s why
HIGHLIGHTS

Apple is now planning to pull plugs on the projects.

This project went by the codename “Sinope”.

Naver’s blog has shared that Apple is probably discontinuing this project.

Apple has always been on top of its game. The California-based tech giant puts a lot of effort into its research and development game. It tries to get the ultimate control of all its devices by making various components in-house. In the same spirit, Apple has been working on developing and cracking the 5G modem code since 2019.

The rumour mill suggests that Apple has wanted to get this done and take the modem into its own hands. Further, it was expected that the in-house modem could debut with the iPhone SE 4.

But we hear that it has failed over time.

Media reports now suggest that owing to several failed attempts, Apple is now planning to pull plugs on the projects. It is now letting go of its plans to develop its own 5G modem. Apple had spent a lot on this project. This project went by the codename “Sinope”.

The company had previously purchased Intel’s modem business for a whopping $1 billion back in 2019 to get a kickstart. As I mentioned previously, the modem was set to be released with the iPhone SE 4. However, not so long ago, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared that Apple was most likely going to miss their deadline to replace the Qualcomm chips with their in-house chips.

Now, Naver’s blog has shared that Apple is probably discontinuing this project. So, it is possible that we will not be able to see Apple’s modem chips in the future.

Well, it isn’t easy to crack the codes for modem chips. It took years of research and development for Qualcomm to develop its technology. However, Apple has also achieved success in this space with its M-series chips for Macs.
