AMD Ryzen 7 8700F has Ryzen AI NPU enabled but Ryzen 5 8400G does not

AMD Ryzen 7 8700F will retail for USD 269 and Ryzen 5 8400F will sell for USD 169. Official Indian prices unknown

AMD welcomes two new desktop processors into its Zen 4 family with the official launch of the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and the AMD Ryzen 5 8400F. Since these processors carry the ‘F’ suffix, they ship without any integrated graphics capabilities. As such, ‘F’ CPUs are a little cheaper than their ‘X’, ‘G’ or vanilla counterparts. These processors had been launched in China during the Beijing AI PC Innovation Summit but are now being made available globally. The Ryzen 7 8700F will retail for USD 269 and the Ryzen 5 8400F carries a price tag of USD 169 in the US. These two processors have not yet been spotted on Indian e-commerce platforms or popular PC parts stores.

AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F Specifications

The new AMD Ryzen 8000 F-Series CPUs are based on their Phoenix design which is used in mobile chips as well as the recently released G-series chips. These feature a slightly different design than the 7000-series Raphael chips as they need to incorporate integrated graphics based on RDNA 3. The processors with functional iGPUs get labelled as part of the G-series whereas the rest become F-series. However, both the F-series processors launching today aren’t the same since only the Ryzen 7 8700F comes with an NPU (Ryzen AI).

The Ryzen 7 8700F is an 8-Core / 16-Thread CPU with a base clock of 4.1 GHz and a boost clock of 5.0 GHz. And the Ryzen 5 8400F sports a 6-Core / 12-Thread core configuration with a base clock of 4.2 GHz and the boost clock going all the way up to 4.7 GHz. Usually, processors without an integrated graphics block tend to be clocked a little higher than their G-series counterparts but the F-series processors don’t seem to be clocked higher.

AMD Ryzen 7 8700F Performance

Both processors are 65W TDP SKUs with a Wraith Stealth cooler included in the retail packaging. AMD claims that the 8700F can outperform the Intel Core i5 14400F across several video games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Watchdogs: Legion, Counter-Strike 2, Elden Ring, The Division 2, and also in content creation workloads. It should be noted that a Core i5 processor which is mid-tier is being compared to a Ryzen 7 (top-tier) processor. That being said, AMD also states that their mid-tier 8400F will outperform the older gen 13400F from Intel which is also mid-tier in gaming workloads. Since lower tiers are more price-sensitive, we can come back to this once Indian prices are unveiled.
