AMD has decided to put one over its rivals by launching 5 new processors aimed at the “ultrathin notebook” segment. While AMD have traditionally been the hotter running processors, they might have finally shed that tag by unveiling processors with a TDP as low as 9 watts in the new V105 processor. The thermal design power (TDP), sometimes called thermal design point, represents the maximum amount of power the cooling system in a computer is required to dissipate. Heat dissipation is of prime importance in thin notebooks and netbooks, which AMD has seen as a promising segment. The processors are from Turion II Neo dual-core, Athlon II Neo dual-core, Athlon II Neo and V series lines.
The announcement of these new processors comes hot on the heels of AMD’s vision trailers at the Cannes Film Festival. The Vision strategy has computer makers placing red logos on their products to indicate the best use scenario for the system. The Vision logo indicates an entry-level system, Vision Premium means higher performance for media viewing, Vision Ultimate means the system is also capable of content creation, and Vision Black is placed on the highest end systems aimed at hardcore gamers and computer enthusiasts. They focus on use rather than the technical specifications that, according to AMD, mean little to average consumers.
AMD is quite keen on promoting its Vision platforms and claims that these can bring quite an impressive performance when compared to Intel and Nvidia equipped platforms thanks to the ATI Radeon HD 5400 or Radeon HD 4200 graphics. In addition to the graphics options, the entire lineup of these new processors boasts of an improved battery life for the device.
