HIGHLIGHTS

On the topic of ray tracing, AMD CEO Lisa Su says that it’s one of the important technologies and consumers will soon hear more about what they are doing with ray tracing.

Highlights:

  • AMD says its working on ray tracing.
  • The company also adds that it’s working on many other important technologies.
  • Nvidia embracing FreeSync shows that AMD made the right choice, says AMD CEO.

During the recently concluded CES 2019 event, AMD CEO Lisa Su announced the new Radeon VII GPU. After the reveal, the company hosted a media roundtable where Su answered some additional questions about the company’s stand on Ray Tracing and other technologies. The interaction was transcribed by PC World and one of the questions Su was asked was regarding where the company stands on ray tracing. Su replied that ray tracing is an important technology for the company. “It’s one of the important technologies; there are lots of other important technologies and you will hear more about what we’re doing with ray tracing. You know, we certainly have a lot going on, both hardware and software, as we bring up that entire ecosystem.”

When asked about Nvidia’s announcement of supporting G-Sync on FreeSync Displays, Su reverted, “Look, we knew FreeSync was the right answer. We’ve known FreeSync was the right answer for a couple of years. The fact that others have decided that FreeSync is the right answer, I think, says that we made the right choice a few years ago. We believe in open standard. You know, we believe in open ecosystems. That’s been a mantra. So we have no issue with our competitors about FreeSync. And we think that just means that, you know, it’s better for gamers and we did a good job.”

On AMD's plans for software support on ray tracing, Su replied, "It’s fair to say that. I don’t think we should say that we’re waiting. I would say that we are deep into development, and that development is concurrent between hardware and software. And so for us, it’s, you know, what is the consumer going to see? The consumer doesn’t see a lot of benefit today because the other parts of the ecosystem are not ready. I think by the time we talk more about ray tracing, the consumers will see that.”

Su answered some more queries on topics like the variable quality on FreeSync Monitors. As per Su, there is no problem since there are over 550 monitors featuring FreeSync technology and with varying price points, one gets the experience they pay for.
