This has been the year of AI, and brands are saying: “Hold my cup, we’ve just started”. Amazon is the latest one to introduce a new AI feature. It has reportedly developed a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) model that can process both images and videos along with text.

A report by The Information revealed that Amazon has developed a large language model, which goes by the codename Olympus. It aims to reduce Amazon’s dependence on external AI providers, such as Anthropic. Its Claude chatbot is currently a key product on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Olympus will reportedly allow users to search for specific visual scenes using natural language prompts. This is pretty different from the text-based AI systems that we are used to. With this, Amazon can try to compete directly with the likes of Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, who are considered leaders in generative AI innovation.

Previously, Amazon had invested $4 billion in Anthropic to foster and promote AI development and the reported development of Olympus comes in pretty close to that. This indicates that even though Amazon has ties with Anthropic it is trying to establish a more independent and competitive position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Olympus’ release can become a major milestone for Amazon and its positioning in the market. Once Amazon announces the new model, it can also send out a signal to other industry giants that it does not lag behind when it comes to AI.

The model may be officially announced as early as next week at Amazon’s annual AWS re: Invent customer conference, as per the report. However, Amazon is yet to confirm the same. We will update you whenever Amazon shares something.
