After more than two decades in the e-commerce sector, Amazon is now setting its sights on traditional brick and mortar stores. The company has unveiled a new grocery store called Amazon Go, which aims to remove what is arguably the most annoying part of any modern shopping experience, checkout lines. It says that customers will be able to pick up whatever they want from the store and just walk out. The bill for the items is then sent to the user’s Amazon account.
All a customer has to do is download and use the Amazon Go app when entering the store. That’s about it. The company says that the system uses a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning, which is the same technology used in the self-driving cars. The technology can detect which items a customer picks up and can also remove any item that is placed back on the shelf. Amazon aptly calls this system, ‘Just Walk Out’ technology.
The Amazon Go store is located in Seattle, USA and is currently only open to Amazon employees who are a part of the beta program. It will be open to the public in early 2017.
