Manish Tiwary, the head of Amazon’s operations in India, is leaving the company to pursue a new opportunity. This departure comes at a critical time for Amazon as it faces increasing competition in one of its most important markets.

Tiwary, who became the country head in late 2020, is leaving as Amazon has shifted its focus more towards its cloud business in India while shutting down other ventures like its food delivery service, according to TechCrunch.

While Amazon has confirmed Tiwary’s departure, it did not name his successor. Amit Agarwal, who previously led Amazon India and currently oversees Amazon’s emerging economies initiative, will “remain closely involved with the Amazon team,” a company spokesperson said.

Amazon has invested over $7 billion in India but faces significant challenges in expanding into smaller cities and towns. In these areas, local competitors like Flipkart and Meesho have established stronger presences. Analysts attribute Amazon’s struggles in these regions to its limited product selection for budget-conscious customers and less developed logistics networks.

Meesho has surpassed Amazon in mobile app monthly active users among e-commerce platforms in India, according to a note by Morgan Stanley analysts. Additionally, Flipkart boasts over 50 million daily active users on its mobile apps in the country, while Amazon has fewer than 40 million, as per Bank of America analysts.

In urban areas, Amazon faces competition from quick commerce firms such as BlinkIt, Swiggy, and Zepto, which offer ultra-fast deliveries in just 10 minutes. Recently, Flipkart launched its own quick delivery service in Bengaluru. There have also been reports that Amazon is in talks to acquire a stake in Swiggy, indicating its interest in the quick commerce market.

Despite these challenges, Amazon remains optimistic about its future in India. “India is an important priority for Amazon,” the company stated. “We are excited by the momentum and business results we have already achieved, and we are even more optimistic about the significant opportunities ahead to innovate on behalf of our customers and digitally transform lives and livelihoods.”
