If you’re someone who frequently receives calls from unknown numbers, you might want to be extra cautious. The Indian government has issued a warning to mobile phone users, urging them to stay vigilant against international fraud calls. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) took to X (formerly Twitter) to alert users, urging them to avoid answering calls from certain international dialling codes. This caution comes as a response to a rise in fraudulent activities, where scammers disguise themselves as government officials or trusted entities.

Warning against specific dialling codes

In its post, the DoT highlighted that fraudsters often use numbers starting with the international dialling codes +77, +89, +85, +86, and +84. These numbers are associated with fraudulent activities, and the government wants users to be cautious of any calls originating from these codes. The message from the DoT is clear: the government will never make calls from these numbers, so if you receive one, it’s most likely a scam.

What you should do

If you happen to get a call or SMS from an unknown number with any of these dialling codes, it’s best to avoid engaging with the caller. The government has urged users to report such calls through the Sanchar Saathi portal, via Chakshu. By doing so, you’ll be helping the DoT identify and block these malicious numbers, preventing others from falling victim to similar scams.

The government’s warning is part of its ongoing effort to protect citizens from a growing number of cybercrimes and frauds. With more scammers using sophisticated tactics, staying cautious and reporting suspicious activity is more important than ever.

As mobile phone usage continues to increase, the risk of receiving fraudulent calls also grows. It’s crucial to remember that no legitimate organisation or government official would contact you from an unfamiliar number asking for sensitive information. By staying alert and following the DoT’s advice, you can help keep your personal details secure and avoid falling for scams. Always trust your instincts—if something feels off, don’t hesitate to report it.
