'Light Rider' is an e-motorcycle that weighs 35 kilos, and costs Rs. 38 lacs.
Light Rider, created by APWorks, is a 3D-printed e-motorcycle. A brainchild of Airbus' German subsidiary, Light Rider has been named so as it weighs just 77 lbs (approx 35 kg). APWorks is accepting orders for only 50 motorbikes, each costing €50,000, or Rs. 38 lacs approximately.
The motorcycle has been developed using metallic 3D-printing technique that deploys an alloy named Scalmalloy. According to APWorks, Scalmalloy is an Aluminium powder that is corrosion-resistant, retains Aluminium's low-weight property, and Titanium's specific strength. Each part of the motorcycle consists of thousands of very thin printed layers, each being just 60 microns in thickness.
Hence, 3D printing this motorbike allowed for a branched hollow structure for the frame thus making it light, which otherwise would not have been possible with conventional milling or welding. The frame weighs only 13 pounds (5.9 kg), which is a 30% reduction in comparison to conventional e-motorcycles. The Light Rider has a range of 37 miles (60 kilometres) on a single charge.
