We saw a lot of advancements in AI this year. We saw things that we never expected with AI. And turns out, this has just started. Recently, researchers at the Jameel Clinic for Machine Learning and MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) developed a deep learning model named Mirai. This deep learning model is based on mammography. Mammography can help with early detection of breast cancer in high-risk women.
Businessman Anand Mahindra, who is known for his X (formerly Twitter) activity, also shared this on his X feed. He said, “If this is accurate, then AI is going to be of significantly more value to us than we imagined and much earlier than we had imagined.”
With this new model, the researchers hope to increase the early detection chances. It is expected that this artificial intelligence system can outperform existing risk-assessment algorithms in estimating the likelihood of breast cancer from a mammogram. This can turn out to be a blessing for a lot of women.

The Mirai system was tested on patients from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and other datasets, according to a study published in Science Translational Medicine. It was trained using the screening mammography dataset from MGH.
Mirai houses four modules: an image aggregator, a risk-factor prediction module, and an additive-hazard layer that uses patient risk variables and mammography analysis to forecast the patient’s risk annually for the next five years.
