Acer CEO hints at budget quad-core tablets in the near future
Close on the heels of the Acer Iconia B1 announcement, Acer's CEO has indicated that low-cost quad-core tablets are currently in the works.
Acer had announced a budget 7-inch Android 4.1 tablet – the Iconia B1 at CES 2013, and subsquently launched it in India with a wonderful pricing of Rs. 7,999. According to a report in China Times, that may just be the tip of the tablet iceberg.
The Taiwanese company is said to be planning to launch more budget tablets sporting an 8-inch and 10-inch screen size. What makes these supposed tablets even more enticing is the fact that they will most likely sport a quad-core processor.
Speaking to China Times, Linxian Lang, Acer’s CEO, spoke about expanding the tablet portfolio with more size options and aggressive price points. The tablets will not only sport bigger screen sizes, but have quad-core MediaTek SoC’s powering them under the hood. These tablets are expected to be selling in the price range of USD 200 to USD 240 (Rs. 11,000 to Rs. 13,750 approximately). Quad-core tablets at those price points could be game-changers.
Lang also believes that global tablet shipments will cross the 200 million units mark of which 80 million will comprise the high-end segment including Samsung and Apple tablets. He expects Acer to sell a major chunk of the 120 million lower-end models.
