A closer look at YouTube Box Office

Updated on 09-Jun-2011

YouTube recently announced you don’t need to queue outside multiplexes to watch those Bollywood blockbusters anymore, just log-on to the “You Tube Box Office“. The largest video sharing website has launched a new channel ‘YouTube Box Office’ where movie lovers can watch the latest films for absolutely free. The service, exclusively available in India, kicks off with the super hit film Band Baja Barat. Chip-giant Intel is the major sponsor for the You Tube Box Office venture.

  • Apart from the regular Bollywood movies, YouTube Box Office will also showcase regional movies.
  • YouTube also provides users option to view the film in 720p and 1080p along with other resolutions. However, the playing of video will depend on the speed of the broadband connection.
  • To make movie watching more fun, YouTube will offer movie trivia and contests.
  • You can also see the deleted scenes, making of the film and other rare footages that are available in the film DVD.

YouTube hopes the initiative will help draw more viewers for their premium and exclusive content. Apart from the expanding its popularity, the video sharing network also aims to create opportunities for marketers. Prior to this, YouTube had provided live streaming of Indian Premier League matches — a move that pushed its popularity in the cricket-crazy nation. Recently, it showcased blockbuster movie Dabangg, which too bagged overwhelming response. YouTube has already partnered with several popular Indian news and entertainment and expects to achieve similar success in its latest effort.

Many believe the move is certainly going to stiffen the competition in the online movie streaming business in India. Considering the growth in broadband penetration and improving internet connectivity speed in the country, online video browsing is going to be more fun and lively. It is expected that several more prominent names in the business are going to enter the Indian market in near future. Well, just wait and watch!
