Volvo Auto India has launched its latest compact SUV, the 2018 Volvo XC40 at Rs. 39.9 lac. The latest SUV from Volvo was unveiled late last year in Europe, and Volvo has succeeded in bringing it to India fairly soon after launch. The 2018 Volvo XC40 is being offered in India only in its fully-equipped R-Design trim, and was already up for preorders from outlets all across India for a fee of Rs. 5 lac. The compact SUV from the Swedish carmaker's stable will take on the German heavyweights like the Mercedes-Benz GLC, the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3, and from what we saw upon our first drive, can be a very compelling option despite the heavy competition.
The 2018 Volvo XC40 is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder Volvo D4 diesel engine that produces 190 bhp and 400 Nm torque. This is paired with an Isin-sourced 8-speed automatic gearbox, and also comes with Haldex permanent all-wheel drive system. By default, you get 18-inch alloy wheels running on Pirelli P-Zero tyres, and inside, even this entry-segment offering from Volvo includes the fantastic 9-inch Sensus infotainment system and a 13-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system. In terms of looks, the Volvo XC40 includes many design elements from its pricier siblings, but still manages to make its unique, boxy, upright presence. Elements like the angular tail LEDs and the Thor's Hammer DRLs are all in place, and those familiar with Volvos will immediately recognise the signature side profile as well.
The most unique bit about the 2018 Volvo XC40 is its advanced driver assistance system suite, which makes it the most advanced car in its segment. The XC40 gets front-facing radar and multiple infrared and imaging sensors around the car, which facilitates adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, corner stability control, proximity warning and more. This makes the Volvo XC40 class-leading in terms of safety and technology, and will hands-down lead the segment on these fronts until the other carmakers bring their new generation compact SUVs to India.
