Top board games for horror and thriller fans
A good scare every now and then can be fun, and that’s what the entire genre of thriller and horror entertainment is all about. Board games are no different, with the genre making its presence felt in the tabletop scene through popular and niche titles alike. A well-designed horror or thriller game will get you invested in no time, helping you have a lot of fun while exploring the depths of the fictional unknown. Here are some of the top horror and thriller board games that promise a lot of fun with their interesting mechanisms and unique designs.
Bezier Games Ultimate Werewolf Legacy
Werewolf is already quite a popular board game, and this edition adds a legacy twist to it. So, those who are familiar with the game would know that it’s best played with lots of players, divided into two groups – villagers and werewolves – to eliminate each other. There are certain roles assigned to various players for bonus abilities. The Legacy aspect kicks in with the included Diary, which records the result of each game, which impacts the next game and so on. There are titles and family cards with rolling impacts across games, adding a fun planning and plotting angle to the classic. This also makes the game highly replayable, allowing for multiple possible endings to the campaign.
Dead Man's Cabal
Dead Man’s Cabal puts players in the shoes of necromancers looking to raise as many from the dead as possible. The game offers a fairly complex and strategic experience with the active player choosing a private action that impacts the public action each player can subsequently take. Players need to plan this properly to help themselves instead of their opponents. The game features a resource collecting mechanism which then allows players to perform resurrection rituals and place bonus tokens on another active game board. At the end of the game, the player with the most points from a successful resurrection, as well as added bonuses, wins.
Hasbro Gaming Cluedo
The classic murder mystery game Cluedo is a great option for thriller fans with a penchant for solving mysteries. One card of each of the three types – suspect, location and weapon – are placed face down in the confidential file while the rest are distributed equally. Players then move suspects around the board to rooms and then make accusations for that suspect in that room with a murder weapon. The next player must show one of any cards from the accusation that they have in their hand to the first player. Following this pattern, the first player to use deductive reasoning to make a completely correct accusation wins the game.
Betrayal At House On The Hill – 2nd Edition
Fans of haunted houses will find themselves right at home with Betrayal At House On The Hill. The game allows players to build their own haunted house tile by tile for unique gameplay each time. Players can pick one of the six characters for a game with three to six players. The game involves these characters exploring the various rooms in the house for varying actions that make their heroes stronger. One of these actions triggers a Haunt which causes the player to become a traitor and the other players become heroes. Item, Omen and Event cards add interesting twists to the gameplay.
