Sony has announced a price hike for the PlayStation 5 in Japan, citing a “challenging external environment” as the main reason behind this decision. The price of the standard PS5 model will rise by 19 percent, bringing it to ¥79,980. This new pricing will be effective starting September 2, 2024. But, you don’t have to worry. Fortunately, for gamers in other countries, including India, this price increase does not apply.

This isn’t the first time Sony has adjusted the price of its console. Two years ago, the company raised PS5 prices globally, sparing only the United States, reports Engadget.

Alongside the PS5, prices for accessories like the DualSense controller and PlayStation VR2 will also see an increase in Japan, although the specific price changes for these items have not been detailed.

Sony itself has acknowledged that this could impact sales, and it expects lower PS5 sales for the fiscal year 2025. However, despite the anticipated slowdown, the PS5 has been a massive success, with over 50 million units sold last year. It continues to outsell its primary competitor, the Xbox Series X/S, by a considerable margin.

There are also ongoing rumours that Sony might release a PS5 Pro this fall, which could potentially influence the pricing of the current PS5 model. While there’s no concrete evidence linking the Japanese price hike to a forthcoming PS5 Pro, it’s a possibility worth considering. However, as of now, the existence of the PS5 Pro remains unconfirmed.

For gamers outside Japan, this price hike is not a cause for concern, at least for now. Sony’s decision currently affects only its home market, and there’s no indication that similar price increases will follow in other regions.
