Sneaky Stealth Games on the Xbox One
If you’ve always thought of yourself as a strategic mastermind, then you’re probably not someone who’s easily satisfied by the generic hack and slash games (unless the plot is uber engrossing). Stealth games arguably require you to have a stronger skill set than most other games – you must accurately identify problems, choose your battles wisely (for not every fight is worth the risk of detection), and find creative solutions to meet your goal. If you’re a huge fan of stealth games and love the idea of sneaking up on your enemies before they realise you’re even there, then you’ll enjoy the following games.
Dishonored 2
A sequel to Dishonored, Dishonored 2 takes place 15 years after the events in the first game. Dishonored 2 offers great first-person stealth-action gameplay that’s quite similar to the first game, which means fans of the series should not be disappointed. Having said that, it does bring along a few improvements on the whole that make it worth purchasing. For instance, while you’ll find that Emily’s Far Reach Tendrils and Corvo’s Blink Teleportation abilities function the way you remember, the ability to take down your opponent via non-lethal knockouts is a great add-on for pacifist players. The game is largely about choices and their consequences, with each kill having a ripple effect on the plot. However, with the added Heart feature, you now get insights into each character’s backstory before you kill them. Stunning visuals and great supernatural abilities (that are upgradeable as you play) are definitely strong reasons to play this game.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a stealth game that has a lot to offer, particularly with the director of the series, Hideo Kijima finally embracing the live-action military and techno-fantasy anime styles, the series has been skirting around for years. When you are first dropped into Afghanistan, the endless possibilities before you can seem intimidating – simply because you might be a bit more accustomed to the more linear narratives that MGS has offered in the past. While the mission itself is relatively simple – you must rescue a target and escort him to safety – you’ll encounter a range of stories about child soldiers, what revenge truly costs, and torture, based on the decisions you make. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain also makes violent courses of action feel organic rather than wrong (which they so often do during stealth games). This game also comes with a slow-motion Reflex Time feature that lets you react to an enemy on being detected, letting you prevent combat scenarios if you move quickly enough.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
If the last Deus Ex game you played was Deus Ex: Invisible War, then you’re probably wondering why we’re even talking about this game. Well, it’s because Deus Ex: Mankind Divided not only single-handedly revived the series from certain death, but also offers great stealth-based gameplay that you can’t miss out on. One of the gameplay aspects that sets Deus Ex: Mankind Divided apart from many other games is the fact that you can alter the gameplay style by choosing to play stealth, combat or hacking styles (each style helps you solve different aspects of the story, so in a sense, all are important). Based on your preferred style, your character develops powers and abilities as you play, helping you progress further. If you’re planning on predominantly playing in stealth mode, you must also take care to develop your strength augmentations because you’re going to have to move a lot of heavy stuff out of your way.
Hitman 2
Following the popular Hitman, Hitman 2 offers creative assassination techniques while dropping the episodic approach that the previous game offered. You’ll find that the default killing mode is still garroting people, and the game is filled with classic challenges that require you to kill people sniper-style. You’ll travel to exotic destinations like a fashion show in Paris and a film set in Mumbai as you assassinate and murder your way through each map. As the game will reward experimentation over speed, you can really go crazy with the way you choose to complete your mission. A true stealth experience Hitman 2 is one of the most engrossing games in the genre.
